Shiro Tsujimura Abstract Paintings
April 2 – April 24, 2026
At Kamiya Kojimachi, we are pleased to present an exhibition of abstract paintings by the renowned artist Shiro Tsujimura.
The centerpieces of this exhibition are monumental works spanning up to 3.6 meters in width. These pieces are rendered with rare "Gyoboku" (Imperial Ink) from the Qing Dynasty, prepared using a traditional simmering process to manage the large volume of ink required while preserving its profound density.
The ink is received by traditional Chinese bamboo paper (Chikushi), a material chosen by the artist for its exceptional compatibility with the ink's performance and its long-term archival qualities. While modern industrialization is shifting paper production toward more commercial goods, this specific paper remains a vital medium for capturing the essence of Tsujimura’s brushwork.

Technical Background: Material and Structure
Bamboo Paper and Imperial Ink
While Japanese Washi is known for its versatile, multi-purpose nature, traditional Chinese bamboo paper offers a distinct textural profile specifically suited for ink expression. This paper serves as the optimal vessel to draw out the full potential of the 100-year-old Qing Dynasty ink, resulting in a depth of black that remains unsurpassed.
Preservation and the Four-Panel Structure
The 3.6m x 1.6m work is composed of four individual panels, each measuring 1600mm x 900mm (trimmed from 1800mm x 900mm sheets). While this structure originates from the physical constraints of traditional papermaking, it also serves a critical function in preservation.
Large-scale paper naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, which can place significant stress on the support and the paper fibers themselves. By configuring the work into four panels, we mitigate the risk of tearing and structural warping. This design, informed by our expertise in paper manufacturing and restoration, also ensures the safety and feasibility of transportation and installation in modern environments.
